A preliminary Idea

I’m interested in gathering submissions for a zine about the experiences of Asian American queers. My main focus is on people on the male-ish side of the gender spectrum but I’m pretty open to submissions from the rest of the gender and sexuality spectrum as well. I’d like to focus on the experiences of people who identify as Asian American, but I’m also open to talking to other people of color.

The reason for this zine and these submissions/discussions is that this is part of a research project for the Asian American Genders and Sexualities class that I’m taking under Kevin Kumashiro, Ph.D. This would not be a for-profit venture, I might consider distributing it publicly at stores like Quimby’s here in Chicago and other sorts of alternative bookstore spaces around the country (suggestions?) but not for anything other than to cover the cost of printing. This will be presented as an EXPO Poster later in the spring. More details to be discussed.

Some of what I’m thinking about and why I’m doing this:

How do I as a queer person of color enact oppression on others?

How do I embody and perform my gender presentation and what does that mean in the context of my subcultures of Filipino-American-ness, Queerness, American-ness?

How do the physical attributes of my body affect the way that I am perceived within American culture?

How you can participate

This will be a printed zine (or zines?), probably classic booklet-folded and stapled format, black & white xerox maybe on a colored paper, so the most effective ways for you to work in that format would probably be text (poetry, short story, fiction/nonfiction, confessionals) or some sort of art that can handle being xeroxed. Collage or drawing (analog or digital) would probably work well.

please contact me in my askbox or at my email if you’d like to talk more about this:
